The aim of dog education
In my understanding, the aim of a dog´s education and training is a dog that can you can walk without leash most of the time, while he/she will not run away or attack another dog. A dog that can meet other dogs unleashed and play with them. In the cynological terminology, it means reliable calling off and very good socialization, two conditions to a happy life of both the dog and his handler. However, fulfilment of these conditions is not easy: both expect that your dog respects you as the head of the pack and leaves to you decisions about where he/she will go, and his/her safety.
In other words, the authority of the handler towards the dog stands on nothing less than the dog´s recognition that the handler understands the world better than the dog.
It is the responsibility of the handler to ensure the dog´s safety and to protect him from potential attacks of other dogs or even their efforts to gain dominance over him/her. Only with this being fulfilled, the handler can ask the dog not to attack other dogs and not to try to gain dominance over them. If the handler fails to create such circumstances, the dog takes over the care for his safety himself, with all the unwanted consequence. In the ideal situation, on the contrary, the dog leaves to the handler decisions about his (the dog´s) relations to other dogs and his position in the pack.
